FIDAC has not needed to introduce credit risk into their portfolio to achieve favorable returns. All their assets can be easily priced and traded in the MBS market, so book value fairly approximates liquidation value. FIDAC uses the repurchase markets to finance the acquisition of their investments. They employ other strategies to manage risks associated with leverage including (1) leveraging only liquid assets that are easily priced and have well-defined active markets (2) utilizing self-imposed limits on the amount borrowed from any one lender (3) diversifying counterparty risk by maintaining credit relationships and open financing lines with many high quality lenders and (4) maintaining optimal levels of leverage to protect against margin calls. Chimera Investment Corp. is a specialty finance REIT that invests in residential mortgage loans, real estate-related securities and various other asset classes.
