The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc. is an international non-profit scientific and educational organization based in Bethesda, MD. With over 11,000 members, the society is one of the largest molecular life science societies in the world. The society serves the scientific community through the publication of peer-reviewed journals and science news, organization of scientific meetings, advocacy for funding of basic research and education, support of career development and science education at all levels, promoting the diversity of individuals entering the scientific workforce, and celebrating important contributions and achievements in science and technology made by black scientists. The society also honors an outstanding scientist who has shown a sustained commitment to breaking down local and/or systemic barriers against scientists and students from historically marginalized or excluded groups. Founded in 1906, the society's mission is to advance the science of biochemistry and molecular biology and promote the understanding of the molecular nature of life processes.

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world.
