He started his investment career with the Allan Gray Investment Counsel (AGIC) in 1997.
In 2001, Mr. Houlie moved to Abvest Associates (now called Absa Asset Management) and was instrumental in establishing their equity business, building a solid investment process and domestic equity track record.
After a period as Chief Investment Officer, he was appointed as the CEO of Abvest in 2004.
He then joined Investec Asset Management In 2006 as a Director, and fulfilled the dual roles of Head of South African Equities and Global Equity Portfolio Manager.
In 2012, he started his own globally focused investment firm, later folded into Momentum Asset Management, where he headed their Momentum Contrarian business unit based in Cape Town and the arrangement with Momentum concluded at the end of 2015.
He is a qualified Chartered Accountant and CFA charter holder.
He graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1990.
