Oriens is a hands-on, medium- to long-term manager which invests in the form of equity or equity-type securities in small-to-mid-sized companies in the healthcare, media, retail, financial, information and communications technology services, energy, environmental services and business services sectors. Their geographic focus is primarily on Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. The firm invests EUR 2-5 million in companies, usually in the form of equity or equity-related securities. A typical investment would be via a subscription of new shares potentially combined with the purchase of existing shares. They prudently use debt in all transactions and insist that the management teams and the original owners/entrepreneurs retain a significant stake in the investee company in order to fully align the interests of management, co-shareholders and the firm. Oriens typically takes controlling shareholding positions in investee companies with corresponding Board representation, investing in companies with a proven business model, an established customer base, the ability to generate cash flows, the potential to become a leader in the sector, a need to accelerate growth via organic development or consolidation of fragmented sectors, outstanding management willing to commit significant resources to make the company reach the next level of development and willing to exit the company within their investment horizon of three to five years. As a shareholder, the firm does not get involved in day-to-day operational management but through board representation, participates in strategic decision making (M&A, strategy, budgeting and sale of the company). They also provide daily assistance with strategic challenges and implement important projects through their internal consulting and advisory resources, but investee management has full responsibility for the execution of the business plan. All investment decisions are taken internally by the Investment Committee.
