The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is an organization that represents over 95,000 members and works to protect, promote, and advance the needs of all veterinarians and those they serve. Biopure Corp. developed, manufactured and marketed oxygen therapeutics, a new class of pharmaceuticals that are administered intravenously to increase oxygen transport to the body's tissues. The company used patented and proprietary technology to develop and manufacture two products: Hemopure for human use, and Oxyglobin for veterinary use. It has developed Hemopure for the treatment of patients with cardiovascular ischemia. Oxyglobin, its veterinary product treated anemia in dogs, is the only oxygen therapeutic approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Commission. Biopure was founded in 1984 and was headquartered in Cambridge, MA.
