The South Carolina Bar Association is a unified judicial organization serving over 19,000 members, including lawyers practicing in and beyond South Carolina. The non-profit company is based in Columbia, SC and has subsidiaries in the United States. Its mission is to uphold constitutional principles, improve the administration of justice, maintain high ethical standards, and promote legal education and public service. The bar provides resources and services for legal professionals, including mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) requirements, live and on-demand CLE programs, financial assistance for CLE, legal research tools, practice management support, ethics helplines, mental health counseling, and pro bono opportunities. It administers a voluntary paralegal certification program for qualified paralegals working under lawyer supervision. For the public, the bar offers legal help resources, a lawyer referral service, free legal clinics, disaster legal services, and law-related education programs for K-12 students and educators, such as Constitution Day, mock trials, and civics education initiatives. Governance is managed by a board of governors and house of delegates, with an executive director overseeing daily operations.
