Reed Conner & Birdwell (RCB) employs a value-oriented investment approach that seeks to provide competitive returns in strong markets and to strongly outperform in difficult market environments. The firm's proprietary research focuses on the valuation of individual securities rather than predictions of economic or market trends. RCB seeks to identify exceptional companies that are selling at reasonable valuations and reasonable businesses that are selling at very exceptional valuations. In addition, the firm is known to engage in shareholder activist investment strategies. The firm's investment process includes a careful analysis of return on capital and uses a discounted cash flow methodology as their primary valuation tool. RCB employs the use of systematic screening tools as well as qualitative industry research. They use a variety of tools to develop a comprehensive understanding of the underlying value and associated risks of each potential investment. Their investment selection process begins with a universe of 1300 companies with market-cap greater than $2 billion and 5000 companies with market-cap less than $2 billion. Their screening processes narrow the universe to a focus universe of about 100 stocks. Following company-specific analysis, portfolios are typically concentrated, holding 25 to 35 stocks. Though not limited by sector RCB tends to invest in the stocks of mid-cap and large-cap companies in the finance, retail, electronic technology and healthcare technology sectors. They invest primarily in the stocks of companies located in the US and Europe. RCB maintains a low turnover rate.
